Aluminium hex issue on JRXS type-R, XXX-S

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba serrated nuts RC ball bearing

I had a wheel binding on my car few times and find out wheel axle pin got caved in to the wheel hex so deep, the wheel hex was pressing hard againt "Inner race" of My balls!

I guess this could happend to any car that use a HEX adaptor to mount a wheel

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba serrated nuts RC ball bearing

I asked this to my extended brotherhood of RCtech.net and found out "using a Serrated nut and tight em in right torque" can prevent this problem.

I remember at 360raceway I had to keep tighten a rear right wheel all the time and I have to admit I did over tight that few time.

The M4 Serrated Nuts are available from HPI (# 87270, 87269, 87267) Tamiya (42143)

NOVICE class in ROAR NATS?

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba
image of Ashley Villar is from http://www.skyrocketbatteries.com
For this hobby to survive, every track every event should have a mandatory NOVICE class.

ROAR should imply this rule to their Regional and the national event.

I know that sound way out of the line but look at it this way, I know few beginners who wont sign up at the Regional event even it happening under their nose cause they dont think they belong in any of the calasses, what if the Regional or National is happening at cross the town?

I'm saying this cause I saw something going wrong at my local track, we re having a xray challenge next week and they started with a 17.5 (design for novice IMO) and a 10.5 (for regulars), which I bielive standard classes for the x-ray event.

and they eliminated the 17.5 rookie class cause of poor turn out and 10.5 is gone too cause we all have a 13.5 but no 10.5 in the pit box then they put 1 big class of 13.5.

few days ago I noticed they put 17.5 back but no intention to be a novice class!

so the bottom line is

  • they slow down main class 10.5 >>13.5
  • then they axed the novice 17.5 class
  • then recreated as 2ND TC class for those weak heart ppl with a more drivable 17.5motor!
  • because 10.5 is way too fast for 140ft track!
so where is the class for our novice drivers?

ain't our novice not cool enough to run in these "Big championship" challenge with us?

or are we just too chicken to jamming in a 10.5 class ?

Follow up: at the xray challenge those 3 novice drivers on the picture didn't show up.

a pictures on the top of this post is "our" novice drivers at last trophy races, only 4 showed up but as you can see they are as serious as they can be on the drivers stand and looks so happy with those trophies, but we wont see them like that in this X-ray challenge.

we need to make more rooms for our novice drivers.

RC Racers are Handy men,

Us RC racers are known as a "excellent handy man"

I mean I fixed, washing machine, Laptop, cell phones, home phones, door, tiles, sink, toilet.... you know what I mean, I know you done it too, and our ladies love us for that!

and I was proud of it!

I know regular folks can't beat us RC racers when it comes to fix something.

but until today

I was web surfing today and I found this

and I said, dude ! I done that exact same !

then next picture came and I said...

XXX-s front end mod, In-board pin angle

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba There is about 3deg "in-board pin angle" on the front end of a XXX-S built in and that makes front end feel stiff cause that weird angles put pressure on hinge pins.

and I found following paragraphs from JRXS manual

" In-board Pin Angle: The in-board angle of the front hinge pins is adjustable in 1 degree increments from 0 to +2 degrees (angled out).
The car comes with a 0 degree front pivot block. Running more inboard front toe-out (+1 or +2 degrees) will provide a more responsive feel in the steering with less overall steering. Running less in-board toe (0 degree) will result in more stability with more overall steering."

Do I want more stablillity and more steering on my car?

Absolutely!

so i just put a rear suspension block(LOSA9848) on the front to square up the front end to make my car more 21st century car.

but that made my car's front end too narrow, I swapped wheel hex with pair of 0.255" (LOSA9688) to make 190mm front end.

front end feel lot more smoother, springier.

The Chicane Of Death!

Man! I hate that section at 360raceway, Alex V who was da Mouth at the 2008 Region 1 race enjoy saying that when others crashing in to it, seem like he's loving it!

but....

when he crashed in that section he saying things like these EVERY TIME..

that fXXXg section gotta go, who eva mXXXXxr put that in there I m gonna get him, cXXXer~

puhahahah

then I race at Jackson this summer just to find out there is a COD too! damn. (BTW Alex Suck at that track, maybe cause ....nah....can not be...but maybe cos of COD? hahahah)

for Jackson's COD I had to do some mod on my rear camber rod of the JRXS type-r and shock a standoff showing in post below.

<span class=
when rear wheel get caught in that COD, a rear camber rod and a shock popped out to end my run

The screws you will need for a RR camber rod is a 1/8" button head (LOSA6212) to mount a rod and a 0.150" length flat head screw (LOSA6249) thread locked as showing above

Now you can peel that COD with out Fear....

<span class=

Maybe not...

EZ Shock standoff removing

This mod makes shock re-location faster and also keep it from popping out when you crash sideway (like chicanes)

To get this done you will need to change stock 1/2inch (13mm) screw to 10mm length screw, narrow washer (LOSA6215) and thread locked a 1/8" button head screw (LOSA6212) on it.

Don't take shorts cut, follow the manual

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba
My racing buddy "Young" put a shorter than the stock screw to mount that part and that part snapped in there, the part is machined aluminium, naturally that spot is paper thin, make sure you have long enough screw to strength the whole thing.

I also believe that part can flex on the Corners if you don't have a metal screw supporting it.

I think he did that to save some tool time but that actually cost him more time!

Lucas urbain's Run at 2009 ETC

My guesses is his tire blew up at the end, some scary moments

Follow up: Lucas told me he's steering got locked on that corner.

Diff height on Losi JRXS

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba
Many people talking about how to tune chassis with that, but from the old days I always believe "straight shaft spin more efficiently"

I adjust my diff height so the CVD bones become parallel with the ground/setting board.

then forget about it~

RCD Boot / shrink wrap

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba
IMO Biggest advantage for the RCD over a CVD is you can shrink wrap those pins instead of set screw, it holds grease better, also less dust inside

maintainanace also become easy cause with right flexible shrink you can just peel that thing off and reuse them, Green planet!

Once my CVD wear out on my B4 I'll switch to B44's RCD and do the same

Addendum to Groskamp's Shock video

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba
Great video, I just wanted to add my tip on this

at 5:50 he try to make even pressure shock on all 4 by holding shaft out.

I cut 2mm thick plastic "O" ring in to "C ring, stick on the shaft as shown when I assemble a shock then remove it

do that on all 4 shocks to make em evenly rebound, Every time.

Truth about your shock oils

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba
Since I read that link I dumped all my Losi/trinity/ AE oils away and replaced them all with the Mugen, since then everytime I changed to higher/Lower CTS oil, shcok get harder/softer in amount as I expected, linear viscosity. very true

AE's WT game screwed us big time!

Losi once tried CTS for awhile in 90's (remember 275?350? Synthetic fluids?) but the racers been brain washed by the AE's pure silicone "WT" too long no one touched Losi's ...that made losi change back to WT in less than a year!

Associated you EVIL!

Things that I should keep doing on my cars

<span class=
Back in the RC10 days I used to polish every hinge pins, ball ends, changing shock oil almost every run! re-grease diff all the time but no more of that or cutting comm or etc..

I just brought out polishing wax and did Rear end of JRX-S
Hinge pins, rod ends, shock mounting ball ends...

man..what a difference, my car don't feel muggy no more, (is that a right expression?)

My car feel springy(?) when I compress the rear end
I ll do front end, hoply before the Xray race.

Ball end tool

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba

with a Hex screw washer, 4-40 screw and a nut, I made this.

I can install or disassemble a ball without scratching it

2009 Europian Touring Champion videos

Tamiya won overall 2009ETC @Luxemburg

but one thing I noticed...............

Tires coming off like crazy!

Something diffrent about this event was every time good races about to happend this LRP(Takeoff OEM I guess?) tires coming off from the wheels to ruin a run! some hairy moments been taped! enjoy it!

How to adjust sway bars

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba

Lucar's car

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba

This is mine

I try to take a picture like redrc's french driver's car but just can't do it! haha

from this rear view I want to point out its a important to have a sway bar holder (plastic piece) evenly screwed down, I think that s why Losi used cap head screw instead of button head, like every where else on this car (there is few spot losi used hex head for reasons, I bielive)

with that in mind I used wide aluminium washer instead of losi narrow washer to more evenly spread the screw's force.

also want to mention that sway bar should be 90 deg angled against the sway bars linkgae when it s on RH.

after installed the sway bars I did little tweaking by adjusting linkage length, this is how I done it
  1. remove shocks, wheels, wheel nuts AND the SWAYBAR from the linkage.
  2. make sure the sway bar is moving freely, that sway bar is free falling with it's own weight.
  3. attached back the sway bars with linkages
  4. stick a droop gauge under a hub carrier until opposite end start lifting, measure that
  5. do same on other side to see compare the numbers
  6. by adjusting length of linkage make that "Lifting point" even on both sides
Thats how I do it, which side to turn to make lift early? I never remeber that you will find out soon

XXX-S

Losi xxx-s team Losi RC car R/C cars JRXs Type-R HPI Team Associated touring car rc racing sorex takeoff forward tires rc tires airtronics TAMIYA futaba
Yes I'm also going to talk about the XXX-S in this blog
the car have a sealed tranny that makes perfect for a parking lot track or a track with lots of dust.

I ran this at SOCAL raceway (asphalt) back in 2001-2002 for a season then I brought it back to life with me on 360raceway which was carpet surface in 2008.

Car was workign well on asphalt with normal (3-4mm?) droop with soft springs @ SOCAL but once I learned new way to measure Droop (1-2mm drrop over RH) and little bits of stiffer springs, the HELL broke lose!

one of the X-Losi driver showed me how to droop correctly for the XXX-S, just like old offroad cars this car need to be droop with shock's own length! (inside shock limiters) cause this car have a droop screw on the bumpers (soft rubber like meterial) once you put little bit of pressure on it droop changes every seconds!!

once I start drooping with shock length car became much smoother or lets say the suspension working correctley, in other words..adjust a spring collar 1 or 2 turn makes difference on Riding height.

I have few detail like to share, I ll be back soon

bye for now

Dremel repair Done!

Dremel repair is done!

I try to make a hybrid one from those two broken one but not so good as I said in last post, the problem was brush hood is dirty and brushes get stuck on the hood therefore no brushes reaching the Commutator!

DOH!

little bit of filing and shining action on the hood from old brushed days did the trick.!

here I come graphite dusts!!

Dremel repair

I tried to fix couple of old Dremels and so far no luck

first one have no power, the other got melted coupler, I put those good parts together from two and guess what ?? both dont work!!!
